Spain Cap Ties Barcelona Wonderkid of Nigerian Descent, Vicky López

The Royal Spanish Football Federation has successfully secured the international commitment of FC Barcelona Femení forward Vicky López, who is of Nigerian descent. López earned her fourth cap for Spain in a UEFA Women’s Championship qualifier against Denmark, thereby becoming ineligible to represent Nigeria at the international level.

López made her senior debut for Spain in February 2024 in a Nations League semifinal against the Netherlands. She has since made appearances in the final against France and a match against the Czech Republic, totalling four caps, which includes one competitive fixture, thus binding her to Spain under FIFA rules.

Previously, López had shown interest in playing for Nigeria, but the Nigeria Football Federation did not act swiftly. The 17 year old won the Golden Ball at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup and is the youngest ever El Clásico goalscorer, having netted against Real Madrid at 17 years and 116 days.
