“It was painful, heartbreaking” – Olowookere laments Flamingos’ U17 WWC defeat

Bankole Olowookere, head coach of the Flamingos (Nigeria U-17 women’s national team), described his side’s 1-0 defeat to France U17 Women at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as “painful” and “heartbreaking”.

Olowookere admitted the loss dealt a serious blow to the Flamingos’ ambitions in the tournament, leaving them with zero points after two group matches and facing an uphill battle to progress.

He emphasised that while the outcome was harsh, the team must now refocus and draw lessons from the match  particularly around defensive discipline, transitions and finishing in order to revive their campaign.
