Nigeria launches E-Sports Federation to boost digital sports industry

In a significant development for Nigeria’s sports sector, the National Sports Commission NSC has officially inaugurated the E-Sports Federation of Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

During the launch, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko emphasized that the federation aims to position Nigeria as a competitive force in global e-sports while engaging young Nigerians in the fast-growing digital sports sector.

Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC Director General, highlighted the transformative potential of e-sports, stating that it has the power to energize and encourage youth participation in the digital economy. He cited an estimated 46 million e-sports enthusiasts in Nigeria and stressed that the federation will help the country tap into an industry valued at nearly $30 billion globally.

The initiative faced significant hurdles, with Olopade acknowledging a six-year struggle to unify stakeholders. However, he praised the NSC’s perseverance, stating, “This step forward will help Nigeria leverage the opportunities in the digital sports industry.”

At the event, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, MD/CEO of the Bank of Industry, assured that the banking sector would support the new federation in achieving its goals.

The 13 member board of the federation will be led by Yahaya Maikori (President) and Pedro Damilola (Chief Operating Officer). Other key members include Emmanuel Oyelakin, Sunny Gullong, Sidney Esiri, Suzan Adenoyi, Ikechukwu Okoye, Kunmi Adenipebi (Technical Representative), and Tunde Onakoya (International Representative).

With this launch, Nigeria is set to embrace the e-sports revolution, providing new opportunities for youth engagement, economic growth, and global competitiveness in the gaming and digital sports industry.
