Restoration Work Underway at Godswill Akpabio Stadium

Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria’s only FIFA/CAF approved venue for international football matches, is undergoing restoration work following growing concerns over the poor state of its pitch. The stadium, commonly known as the Nest of Champions, has been a crucial host for the Super Eagles, Akwa United, and top Nigerian clubs like Rivers United, Enugu Rangers, and Enyimba in continental tournaments.

The pitch’s deteriorating condition became evident during Enyimba’s recent continental fixture against Al Masry of Egypt, raising alarms about its impact on gameplay. Despite a maintenance agreement between the Akwa Ibom State Government and Julius Berger the original construction company the playing surface has suffered significant wear and tear.

A Nigeria Football Federation NFF official confirmed that the federation has urged the state government to take immediate action, stressing the need for expert intervention in restoring the pitch to top condition. “The state government has a committee responsible for the stadium’s upkeep, and we want them to assess the pitch and resolve problem areas,” the official stated.

In response, Akwa Ibom State Football Association Chairman, Samuel Umoh, announced that Julius Berger has begun maintenance work. However, the ongoing football season has made a full scale renovation difficult. “Ideally, the stadium should be closed temporarily for repairs, but this isn’t possible due to Enyimba and Akwa United’s fixtures,” Umoh explained.

Despite these challenges, stakeholders remain hopeful that the pitch will be restored to its former world class standard, preserving its reputation as Nigeria’s premier international football venue.
