The Nasarawa State Government has embarked on a comprehensive upgrade of Lafia City Stadium as part of preparations for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season. Led by Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, the inspection team assessed critical areas of the facility on Monday.
This initiative responds to the NPFL Board’s June 3 directive requiring participating clubs to meet updated league facility standards. Planned improvements include the installation of LED floodlights for evening matches, provision of a backup power generator, renovation of playing turf, reinforced perimeter fencing, safe emergency access points, and refurbished changing rooms for both players and officials.
Yakubu emphasised the administration’s eagerness to keep home matches in Lafia, stating: “We have identified critical areas needing immediate attention… the governor is passionate about sports… and will ensure our teams do not suffer the hardship of playing home games away from Lafia.”
The upgrades are expected to be completed in time to host the prestigious Gusau/Ahlan Cup preseason tournament before the league season begins on 22 August 2025.
