Heartland FC assistant coach, Charles Uzor, insists that the 2024/2025 Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL title race is still very much undecided. Speaking on behalf of head coach Emmanuel Amuneke, Uzor made the remarks following Heartlandโs 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, during matchday 17.
Despite conceding a late equaliser due to a lapse in concentration, Uzor remains optimistic. With 21 matches left in the season, he believes the team has ample opportunity to turn things around. โThe league is still very much open. Weโll go back to the drawing board and continue the work. We believe in our next game, weโll come out with a better result,โ Uzor stated.
He attributed the dropped points to a momentary loss of focus but reiterated the importance of 100% concentration in football. โYou draw your match strategy, but sometimes it doesnโt work out the way you expect. We lost concentration in the very last minute of the game, and you know, in football, any split second you lose focus, anything can happen.โ
Describing Heartland as a young and growing team, Uzor praised the playersโ gradual improvement. โFootball is not mathematics where 1+1 always gives you 2. They are young boys, and they will keep improving.โ
Heartland currently occupy 11th position in the standings with 21 points, while Akwa United sit at the bottom with 16 points. Heartlandโs next fixture is an away clash against Akwa United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Editorial
Heartlandโs assistant coach Charles Uzor presents a refreshing perspective on the unpredictability of the NPFL. His confidence in the team, despite a frustrating draw, underscores the resilience and patience necessary in a demanding league. The NPFL has long been known for its competitiveness, where small margins often decide titles and relegation battles. For Heartland, Uzorโs comments reflect not just optimism but also a realistic understanding of footballโs complexities.
Consistency remains the key to climbing the NPFL table. A lapse in concentration cost Heartland dearly, serving as a reminder that success in this league demands focus from start to finish. Uzorโs acknowledgement of his squadโs youthfulness is significant. A team filled with developing talents may falter in critical moments, but with proper mentoring and tactical discipline, they have the potential to evolve into formidable contenders.
The Nigerian league continues to be a proving ground for young footballers and coaches alike. Uzorโs belief in improvement highlights the developmental nature of Nigerian football a system that thrives on patience and gradual progress. Heartlandโs next match against Akwa United will serve as an opportunity to regain confidence, and for the young squad, itโs a chance to prove that they are learning from their mistakes.
In a league where surprises are commonplace, Uzorโs faith in Heartlandโs potential serves as a rallying call. It is now up to the team to respond with performances that back up their assistant coachโs optimism.
