Former Nigerian international and Heartland FC coach, Christian Obi, tragically passed away in a fatal road accident involving the club. The accident occurred en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where the team was set to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Pre season Tournament. Heartland FC confirmed the death of Obi, while several players have been hospitalised following the crash.
Heartland FC released a statement saying, With sadness in our heart and total submission to the will of God, we announce the death of Christian Power Obi, who passed away on Friday, 23rd August 2024, due to a road accident.
Coach Obi had previously led Heartland FC to promotion by winning the NNL playoffs in Asaba, Delta State, during the 2022–2023 season. However, under his leadership, the team was relegated from the NPFL in the most recent season. There are speculations that Heartland might secure a return to the NPFL by purchasing the slot of Beyond Limits Academy ahead of the new season, which begins on August 31.

We believe that now is the time for Nigerian football authorities, in collaboration with local governments, to review and improve safety protocols for teams on the road. More stringent checks on vehicles, better travel planning, and coordinated efforts to improve road conditions are crucial. Christian Obi’s passing should be a call to action one that leads to meaningful change for the safety and well being of everyone involved in the sport.
As we pay our respects to Coach Obi, we must also stand firm in our resolve to improve the conditions under which our beloved football teams operate. His legacy deserves no less.
