Norwegian top flight club Lillestrom has officially signed promising 16 year old Nigerian winger Seun Akanji from Nigeria National League NNL side Sporting Lagos. The signing, announced on Lillestromโs official website, includes an option for the club to fully purchase the player.
Akanji joined the club for training in mid-January and featured in friendly matches where he impressed sporting director Simon Mesfin and the coaching staff. As a result, the club secured an agreement with Sporting Lagos to ensure the young talent’s development under their guidance.
Before joining Lillestrom, Sporting Lagos had received multiple offers from European and Scandinavian clubs, but Lillestrom successfully made their case as the ideal environment for Akanjiโs growth. Mesfin explained that the winger had been identified during a scouting tournament in Nigeria, where he was highly rated by multiple top-flight Norwegian and Scandinavian teams.
Due to international regulations, Akanji will only be eligible to officially play for Lillestrom in the summer of 2026, after turning 18. Until then, the club has arranged for periodic training visits to ensure a gradual integration into the team and continuous development.
This signing follows a similar path to that of Kparobo Ariheri, another young Nigerian talent whose transfer was secured by Lillestrom in anticipation of future eligibility.

We see Lillestromโs signing of Seun Akanji as part of a growing trend of European clubs tapping into the immense talent pool within Nigeria. This move reflects a shift in strategy, where clubs are increasingly prioritising long term investments in youth development rather than immediate returns.
Akanjiโs potential is undeniable. His impressive showing during a Nigerian scouting tournament placed him on the radar of multiple top-flight clubs, but Lillestromโs proactive approach highlights their strategic planning. By securing his services at just 16, they have ensured that when he turns 18, theyโll already have a player familiar with their system, environment, and playing philosophy.
This move is significant not only for Lillestrom but also for Nigerian football. It demonstrates that local leagues, such as the NNL, are producing players capable of attracting attention from European teams. If nurtured properly, Akanji could become another Nigerian export making waves internationally.
We believe that Lillestromโs decision to integrate him gradually is wise. Itโs important for young talents to receive proper guidance and support, particularly when transitioning to a foreign environment. If Akanjiโs development is handled well, he could follow in the footsteps of Nigerian stars whoโve thrived in Europe.
Ultimately, this transfer is about potential and patience. Akanjiโs success will depend not just on his raw talent, but on the structure Lillestrom provides and the playerโs own commitment to continuous improvement.
