Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu has made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to sign with Montpellier HSC, a French Première Ligue club. Onumonu joined Montpellier as a free agent after mutually parting ways with National Women’s Soccer League NWSL side Utah Royals. The 30 year old striker was brought in to bolster Montpellier’s attack, which features a young forward lineup.
Onumonu, who previously played for NY/NJ Gotham FC before her move to Utah, struggled with injuries and national team call-ups, limiting her appearances for the Royals. However, she was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2024 Olympic Games in France, where she played against Brazil and world champions Spain.
For the 2024-2025 season, Onumonu has been assigned the number 11 shirt at Montpellier HSC.
