Onyemaechi Defends Chelle Appointment, Rebuffs Oliseh Criticism

Bruno Onyemaechi has publicly countered criticism from former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, supporting the NFF’s decision to appoint Eric Chelle as head coach. The Super Eagles forward insists that Chelle the French-born Malian veteran with a UEFA Pro Licence—is the right fit to guide Nigeria through its 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Onyemaechi highlighted Chelle’s proven African pedigree, reminding critics of his experience with Mali and club success in Algeria “He knows African football terrain. His tactical approach and discipline will elevate this team,” he stated. He underscored Chelle’s command in training and support from senior players like Victor Osimhen, who described the coach as “demanding and professional,” focused on fitness and accountability.

In contrast, Oliseh had sharply criticised the appointment, calling it an “insult to our local coaches” and describing Chelle as unqualified compared to Nigerian options, including himself. Onyemaechi dismissed these remarks, asserting that unity and belief in Chelle’s plan are essential for the squad’s success.
