Stringent German tax regulations have derailed the agreement between the Nigeria Football Federation NFF and Coach Bruno Labbadia, which would have seen Labbadia take charge as the head coach of Nigeriaโs Super Eagles. The NFF, after reaching an agreement in principle with Labbadia, was unable to finalize the deal due to the tax obligations imposed by German authorities, which required the NFF to cover an additional 32% to 40% of Labbadia’s salary.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau explained that the tax issue was not initially discussed, and despite attempts to be flexible, Labbadia insisted that the NFF cover the full tax amount, a demand the federation could not meet.
As a result, Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the NFF, will now take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. This will be Eguavoenโs fourth stint as head coach of the Super Eagles, having previously managed the team in 2005-2007, 2010, and 2022.

The collapse of Bruno Labbadia’s appointment as the Super Eagles head coach due to tax complications is a significant setback for Nigerian football. This situation highlights the complexities involved in international coaching appointments, particularly when it comes to financial and legal considerations. The NFF’s decision to withdraw from the agreement rather than incur additional financial burdens is understandable, but it also underscores the need for thorough negotiations and clarity on all fronts before making such announcements.
Augustine Eguavoenโs return as the head coach for the Super Eagles is a familiar move. Eguavoenโs previous stints have been met with mixed results, and this appointment places him under considerable pressure to deliver positive outcomes, particularly with the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon. His experience with the team is a valuable asset, but whether he can guide the Super Eagles to success remains to be seen.
The NFFโs handling of this situation raises important questions about the processes and structures in place for recruiting high profile coaches. Moving forward, it is essential that all aspects of potential agreements, including tax liabilities, are fully explored and resolved before making commitments. Nigerian football deserves stability and clear direction, particularly at a time when the national team is aiming to re establish itself as a dominant force in African football.
As Eguavoen takes the reins once again, the Super Eagles will need to focus on unity, strategy, and execution to navigate the challenges ahead. The upcoming qualifiers are critical, and the team’s performance will be closely scrutinized by fans and stakeholders alike.
