Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has revealed he envisions at least four players from the NPFL earning national team call-ups after being inspired by Benjamin Fredrick’s recent breakthrough. During matches between Ikorodu City vs Plateau United and Remo Stars vs Kwara United, Chelle was particularly impressed, spotting four promising talents in the first game and another three in the second.
Chelle emphasised the characteristics he values sharp passing, accurate shooting, strong endurance, mental toughness and intelligent positioning traits he saw in Remo Stars’ performance despite their 2–0 defeat to Kwara United. He believes the June international window presents an opportunity to test these home-based players in friendlies against Russia and in the Unity Cup.
Following the success of 20 year old centre-back Benjamin Chiemela Fredrick who earned praise for his calm, technically sound debut against Jamaica Chelle is now casting a wider net, ready to refresh the Super Eagles’ squad with fresh, local talent.

We recognise Eric Chelle’s decision as a bold step crucial for Nigerian football’s long-term health. His willingness to delve into the NPFL rather than relying solely on European-based stars sends a powerful message home-ground excellence deserves a chance.
We believe the likes of Fredrick have demonstrated that domestic leagues can indeed produce players capable of performing at the highest level. His composed defensive display against Jamaica proves the point. Now, Chelle believes there are at least four more who can follow in his footsteps.
We feel scouting home-based talent isn’t just symbolic it’s strategic. These players are match-hardened, mentally resilient, and hungry for the international stage. Their inclusion could spark competition, deepen squad depth, and build national unity.
We assert that the June window offers a vital testing ground. Friendly matches aren’t just for assessment—they’re for integration. Bringing NPFL talents into the mix can enhance cohesion and performance.
We stand convinced by separating performance from pedigree, Chelle is charting a course that could redefine Nigerian football culture. It’s time for Nigeria’s league to be treated not as a feeder, but as a partner in national success.
