Speaking at the funeral of late goalkeeper Peter Rufai on Friday, West criticised both the Lagos State government and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for allegedly abandoning Rufai’s family during their time of need.
West highlighted similar cases involving other football legends such as Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha, suggesting a pattern of disregard for the contributions of former players. He also mentioned that Rufai’s family had to seek financial assistance from their group, underscoring the lack of support from the authorities.
Reflecting on the situation, West stated, “I would never advise my son to represent this country,” emphasising his disillusionment with the current state of Nigerian football.
