Rivers United Coach Welcomes ₦100k CAF Boost, Focuses on Performance

A cash boost of ₦100,000 from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has earned praise from Rivers United’s head coach, but he insists his main concern lies on the pitch. Speaking after the announcement of the grant, Yemi Olanrewaju acknowledged the support, saying it brings encouragement to the squad. But he swiftly shifted focus to performance, emphasising that money alone cannot win matches.

“This kind of incentive is good for morale,” he said, “but my focus is on ensuring we deliver results each week.” He pointed out that the reward must complement not replace the hard work in training, tactical preparation, and discipline.

Olanrewaju also revealed that the funds would be shared among players and technical staff, intended to motivate everyone involved in the team’s success. He cautioned, however, that while financial perks are welcome, they should not distract from consistency, commitment and effort.

The coach’s remarks reflect a philosophy rooted in substance over incentives. He insisted that no matter how generous the bonus, a lack of cohesive play, fitness or tactical clarity would render it meaningless.
