Legendary former Nigeria captain, Segun ‘Mathematical’ Odegbami, has congratulated Victor Osimhen after the striker broke his long-standing Super Eagles goal record.
Osimhen scored twice in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali, moving past Odegbami’s tally of 23 goals for the national team. The Galatasaray forward is now the second-highest scorer in Super Eagles history, behind the late Rashidi Yekini, who leads the chart with 37 international goals.
“On behalf of the entire Eagles squad of 1980, I congratulate Nigeria for the incredible victory in Kigali and Victor Osimhen for his individual achievement,” Odegbami said.
Odegbami, who scored 23 goals in 46 appearances for Nigeria, humbly noted that he never considered himself a traditional goal scorer. “Even though I did not consider myself a classic goal scorer because I played mostly from the right wing as an outright winger for the six short years that I played for the national team, the country began to expect me to score goals. I obliged, and the rest is history,” he reflected.
Osimhen’s achievement adds to Nigeria’s proud legacy of attacking talent, and with more matches ahead, the striker looks well-placed to challenge Yekini’s record.
