From Scorer to Shot Stopper: Jecinta’s Journey of Grit and Goals

Echefu Jecinta’s transformation from striker to goalkeeper has been anything but conventional. Today, she commands the box with authority for Ibom Angels, but her journey began on the opposite end of the pitch as a forward with a passion for scoring.

“I was once a striker,” she revealed, smiling. “But something inside me just clicked. I wanted to stop goals more than score them.” That instinct led her to goalkeeping, and it quickly became her calling.

But talent alone didn’t write her story. Her parents had dreams of her becoming a doctor and weren’t supportive of her sporting ambitions. In a bold move, Jecinta left home to pursue football on her terms, taking on jobs at a car wash and even at construction sites to support herself. “I left for survival,” she said.

Her sacrifice paid off. She helped her team secure silver at the National Youth Games in Kwara and went on to win gold at the 2021 National Sports Festival in Delta State. That performance caught the eye of Ibom Angels, who quickly brought her in. “Getting promoted with the team was a big moment for me,” she said proudly.

Though her parents were hesitant at first, their view is beginning to shift. “Now they support me small-small,” she laughed. “At least, they call to check on me sometimes.”

With dreams of donning the green and white, Jecinta has her eyes on a place in Nigeria’s U-17 team, the Flamingos, and eventually a shot at international football. “My goal is to represent Nigeria, to start with the Flamingos in the 2025 FIFA World Cup and take my game to the world.”
