Former Golden Eaglets star Ishaq Abdulrazak is yet to feature for IFK Varnamo in Sweden as he continues to recover from lingering fitness issues, following a turbulent spell at Belgian giants Anderlecht. The club’s sports director, Jorgen Petersson, has confirmed that the 22 year old midfielder is undergoing a carefully restructured rehabilitation process to regain full match fitness.
“When he came here, we knew it would take X number of weeks before he was fit,” Petersson told Fotbollskanalen. “We saw in the medical assessment that he had a problem with a previous injury and that his physical status was not at its peak.”
Although there is no new injury, Petersson explained that Abdulrazak’s rehabilitation needed a complete overhaul. Initially expected to be match-ready upon arrival, his recovery has taken longer than hoped. The target is now for the Nigerian to return to action in early May.
Abdulrazak’s stint at Anderlecht was marked by inconsistent playtime and injury setbacks, leading to his move to Sweden as a fresh start. Varnamo remains optimistic that the midfielder will contribute meaningfully once fully recovered.

Editorial
The case of Ishaq Abdulrazak is a sobering reminder of the unpredictable journey that young talents often face in professional football. Dubbed a ‘Golden Boy’ from his time with Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, expectations have followed the midfielder across clubs and countries. But expectations alone are never enough they must be met with health, stability, and opportunity.
In Sweden, Abdulrazak has a chance to reset his narrative. And IFK Varnamo deserve credit for their transparency and patience. Too often, clubs rush players back from fitness issues in the name of urgency. But here, we see a system prioritising long-term wellness over short-term gains. That’s a shift we need more of in modern football.
Abdulrazak’s past at Anderlecht may have been unfulfilling, but this new chapter offers hope. If properly supported and managed, his return in May could mark the start of a real breakthrough. What matters now is not how long the wait has been but how well he responds when his moment finally arrives.
For Nigerian fans and football watchers alike, it’s worth keeping faith. Because when fully fit, Ishaq Abdulrazak is not just another midfielder he’s a dynamic talent who still has the tools to shine in Europe.
