Brentford’s Benjamin Fredrick Named U21 Players’ Player of the Year

Nigerian youth international Benjamin Fredrick has been voted Brentford U21s Players’ Player of the Year after a standout campaign with the English Premier League club’s development squad.

The 19 year old central defender, who joined Brentford permanently from Nigerian side Simoiben FC in the summer of 2023, signed a four year deal that could extend to 2028. His impact this season was immense, featuring in 30 games across the Professional Development League (PDL) and domestic cup competitions.

Fredrick’s season highlight came in the PDL playoff semifinal, where he scored against Sheffield United, helping his team secure a spot in the national final against Bournemouth. His performances not only earned peer recognition but also caught the eye of first team boss Thomas Frank.

He was named in Brentford’s senior squad for four Premier League fixtures this season including games against Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth though he is yet to make his debut. He also made the bench for two FA Cup matches against Wolves last season.

“I’m really pleased to be recognised by my teammates,” Fredrick said after receiving the award. “Coming from Nigeria, I had to adapt, and I’m happy the hard work is paying off. Next season, my goal is to make my first-team debut.”

Born on May 28, 2005, Fredrick remains eligible for Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, with selections expected later this year.
