Bassey: World Cup Exit Painful But AFCON Is Now the Target

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has admitted that missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a brutal blow — but he insists the team must channel that pain into a renewed push for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Bassey, who featured in every single minute of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign, expressed disappointment at the way things ended, especially in the penalty shootout that ultimately eliminated the team.  He said:

“We did everything we could … we’ve got to keep our heads held high … we go again at AFCON.”
