Leon Balogun, the Rangers defender, has reaffirmed his commitment to playing for Nigeriaโs Super Eagles, dispelling any notions of retirement from international football. Balogun, 36, has not been called up since his substitute appearance during Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipe in June 2022.
Speaking to Brila FM, Balogun explained that injuries had hindered his availability during crucial periods but stressed that he remains eager to represent his country. โItโs not that Iโve not accepted an invitation. Before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was supposed to last a few weeks, but things didnโt go as planned,โ Balogun revealed. โIโve always been available. Iโve never said that I retired from international football, and I think the people who need to know are aware that Iโm still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team.โ
The veteran defender has been in fine form for Rangers this season and boasts 46 caps and one goal for Nigeria. He was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and contributed to the teamโs third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Leon Balogunโs renewed pledge to the Super Eagles is a welcome declaration, especially in a sport where players often quietly step away from international duty. His experience and leadership could prove invaluable for Nigeria as the team seeks to assert dominance on the global stage.
Balogunโs statement also highlights a larger issue in football the challenges posed by injuries and the impact they have on a playerโs career trajectory. His honesty about setbacks and determination to keep going serves as an inspiration to young athletes. Despite being sidelined for extended periods, Balogun has returned stronger, continuing to excel for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
For Nigeria, having a player of Balogunโs calibre willing to don the green and white again is an opportunity that shouldnโt be overlooked. As the team prepares for future competitions, blending his experience with the vigour of younger players could create a formidable squad.
We hope that Balogunโs story reminds fans and decision-makers alike of the importance of valuing veteran players, not only for their skill but also for the wealth of knowledge they bring to the game.
