Rwanda’s head coach, Adel Amrouche, raised concerns about the officiating in their 1-0 loss to Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifier. Speaking after the match in Uyo, Amrouche expressed dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions, though he admitted the replacement referee had been assigned at short notice making it difficult to critique openly.
“I am not going to blame the referee… when we have officiating like this, it is not good,” he said, adding: “I understand, this is Africa. I don’t want to go through another ban again.”
Despite his frustration, Amrouche praised Nigeria’s performance “The Super Eagles, they did well today… They fought, we fought… we gave the supporters a good fight.” Rwanda’s coach remains determined, vowing that his team will continue to fight for World Cup qualification.
Editorial
We understand Coach Amrouche’s concerns but his restraint is wise. Calling out officiating after a high-stakes match is tempting, yet fraught with risk, especially when refereeing appointments likely happened last-minute. Highlighting perceived officiating flaws without inviting sanctions shows tact.
That said, justice must be fair on all fields. When refereeing decisions shape outcomes, it isn’t mere grievance it can impact dreams of qualification. The ideal path lies in advocating for better training, accountability, and consistency from officiating bodies.
