Liverpool have confirmed the release of seven players following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season, including Benin City-born central defender Louis Enahoro-Marcus. The 18 year old, who holds a British passport and has expressed interest in representing Nigeria internationally, will leave the club when his contract officially expires on June 30, 2025.
Enahoro-Marcus joined Liverpool’s youth academy as an Under-10 after being spotted in Manchester by scouts Wayne Woods and Ricky Heywood. Known for his commanding presence at the back, he signed a scholarship deal ahead of the 2023–24 campaign and made 17 appearances in his final season, scoring once in a 2-2 draw against Leeds United in the U18 Premier League.
Despite his progress, Enahoro-Marcus never featured for Liverpool’s first team or in Premier League 2. His departure marks a crossroads in his development, and with the Flying Eagles yet to approach him, his international future remains open.
He is the younger brother of Darrin Enahoro-Marcus, who also spent time in an English academy setup with Watford. The other players released by Liverpool include Dominic Corness, Harry Evers, Lee Jonas, Jakub Ojrzynski, Jacob Poytress, and Reece Trueman.

Enahoro-Marcus has time on his side and a wealth of elite training under his belt. His exposure at one of the world’s most competitive youth systems is invaluable and we believe his next step could be pivotal, especially for Nigerian football. Too many talents of Nigerian descent fall through the cracks in Europe’s elite systems, not for lack of quality but due to depth and timing. That’s where Nigeria must now step in.
The Flying Eagles are still yet to engage Enahoro-Marcus, a move that defies logic considering our historical issues with defensive depth. At 18, he’s still eligible for the U20 World Cup, and Nigeria should act quickly before he gets snapped up by another nation or disappears into the vast uncertainty of free agency.
This also highlights a broader issue: the disconnect between diaspora talents and Nigeria’s national teams. We cannot afford to wait until players break into first teams before showing interest. Early contact and encouragement could change the entire trajectory of a dual-national’s commitment.
