Two English-born goalkeepers with Nigerian heritage Arthur Okonkwo and Owen Goodman delivered standout performances over the weekend, keeping clean sheets for their respective clubs in the English Football League. Their performances come at a critical time, as the Nigeria Football Federation NFF continues to evaluate goalkeeping options for the Super Eagles.

Arthur Okonkwo, a product of the Arsenal academy and currently on loan at Wrexham, was pivotal in his side’s 3-0 victory over Burton Albion in League One. The 23 year old made two vital saves to help secure Wrexham’s second-place standing as they edge closer to Championship promotion. Okonkwo qualifies for Nigeria through his father, Uba Okonkwo, a native of Anambra State.

Meanwhile, 21 year old Owen Goodman also impressed for AFC Wimbledon in their 1-0 win over Harrogate Town in League Two. He made a series of crucial saves, including a spectacular stop from close range that helped preserve the lead until Alistair Smith netted the winner. Goodman, who holds eligibility for England, Canada, and Nigeria, was previously called up for a Flying Eagles training camp ahead of the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup.

With Stanley Nwabali currently Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper, manager Eric Chelle is reportedly scouting for competitive depth in the position, and both Okonkwo and Goodman have certainly bolstered their credentials.
