Goalkeeper Picks Nigeria Over England, Credits Arsenal for Basics

Arsenal-trained goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed that he received his foundational development at the north London club and is now firmly focused on representing Nigeria at senior level.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, the 22 year old has featured for England at youth levels, including the U‑16 and U‑18 sides. However, having impressed on loan at Wrexham helping them to promotion and registering 14 clean sheets Okonkwo says he remains undecided, though Nigeria is firmly in his sights.

Reflecting on his time at Arsenal’s Hale End academy, he stated “I’ve been there for 15 years… I learnt all the basics at Arsenal… now it’s about finding a club where I play regularly and focus on my international future”.

Though eligible for England, Okonkwo emphasises his desire to become a senior international: “I’m ambitious to play at international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria, and I’ve not made a choice yet”.

FIFA approval has already cleared the path for a potential switch to Nigeria. With senior England caps yet to arrive and Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro reportedly showing interest, Okonkwo appears poised to strengthen competition in goal for Nigeria.
