Goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End Academy, has opened up about his decision to represent Nigeria at international level, despite eligibility for both England and Uganda. Currently playing for FC Midtjylland in Denmark, the 22 year old revealed that his heritage and personal conviction made Nigeria the natural choice.
Ejeheri, born in Greenwich to a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother, stated that all three countries had reached out to him. “I know my heritage… I know what it would mean to my mum’s side or my dad’s side for me to play for Uganda or Nigeria. But ultimately the decision is mine,” he told Flashscore.com.
Though he was once invited to an England goalkeeper training camp and also received interest from Uganda, Ejeheri maintained that playing for the Super Eagles had always been his goal. He also cited legendary Nigerian keepers Vincent Enyeama and Peter Rufai as key inspirations in his football journey.
With Stanley Nwabali currently Nigeria’s first choice keeper, Ejeheri remains optimistic about his future role. “As long as I prove myself at club level, there’s no chance I won’t be playing for Nigeria,” he added.
