David Stockbrink, a Dutch born midfielder from Fortuna Sittard’s youth academy, has joined the Flying Eagles’ camp in Katsina as they prepare for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON. The player, who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his mother and also qualifies for Germany, was invited by head coach Aliyu Zubairu to strengthen the squad.
Stockbrink arrived in Nigeria on March 11 and expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating that it is an honour to represent the country. His inclusion in the squad is expected to enhance the team’s technical ability, given his experience in European football.
Although he will return to the Netherlands for club duties, he is set to rejoin the squad before the final preparations for the tournament. The 2025 U20 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 16, also serves as a qualifying event for the FIFA U20 World Cup. Nigeria has been drawn into a tough group alongside Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa.
Coach Zubairu is expected to address the media later this week regarding the team’s readiness for the competition. With the inclusion of Stockbrink and other talents, the Flying Eagles aim to build a strong squad capable of competing at the highest level.

David Stockbrink’s decision to join the Flying Eagles is another example of Nigeria’s growing ability to attract dual-nationality players. In recent years, many young talents with European football backgrounds have opted to represent Nigeria, a trend that has strengthened the depth of the national teams.
Stockbrink’s experience in the Dutch youth system will be valuable to the Flying Eagles. The European style of play, particularly the emphasis on tactical awareness and technical ability, could complement the team’s traditionally physical and fast-paced approach.
However, integrating foreign based players into the squad comes with its challenges. Chemistry and cohesion are crucial in youth tournaments, and players joining late in the preparation phase must quickly adapt to the team’s playing philosophy. Additionally, there is the ongoing debate about balancing homegrown talents with foreign-trained players to ensure fair opportunities for all.
With Nigeria facing strong teams like Egypt and Morocco in the U20 AFCON, Stockbrink and his teammates must be fully prepared for the challenge ahead. If he impresses, he could be part of a new wave of Flying Eagles players who transition into the senior Super Eagles squad in the future.
