NFF Mourns Loss of Bayelsa Queens Coach Domo Okara

The Nigeria Football Federation NFF has expressed deep sorrow and shock at the sudden death of Domo Okara, the Head Coach of Bayelsa Queens Football Club, who passed away on Saturday morning. Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NFF General Secretary, conveyed the federation’s grief and disbelief, highlighting Okara’s significant contributions to women’s football in Nigeria.

We are shocked and saddened beyond words. In all sincerity, we are still trying to process the report. I have spoken to many people who said they interacted with him days earlier and he was hale and hearty. This is a very sorrowful development, Sanusi stated. He described Okara as one of the pillars of women’s football coaching in the country, adding that Okara was more than a coach he was a mentor, a leader, and an inspiration to many. Sanusi also offered prayers for Okara’s eternal rest and comfort for his family, friends, and the football community.

Domo Okara had an illustrious career, leading Bayelsa Queens to numerous victories. Under his guidance, the team won the Nigeria Women’s Premier League in 2022 and the Federation Cup the following year. Bayelsa Queens also earned bronze medals at the 2nd edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco, making them the only Nigerian team to reach such a milestone. Most recently, Okara was with Bayelsa Queens when they secured second place at the NWFL Super 6 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, in May 2024.
