Victor Udoh’s rising trajectory has taken a harsh turn following a serious ankle injury, raising uncertainty over his availability for next month’s Unity Cup in London.
The 20 year old Southampton forward, who was being closely monitored by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, picked up the injury during a Premier League 2 clash against Blackburn Rovers. The match ended in a 3-0 win for the Saints, but Udoh’s night ended prematurely in the 61st minute after collapsing in pain, his cries echoing through the sparsely filled St. Mary’s Stadium.
The former Golden Eaglets striker has since been seen in a leg brace, and it’s unclear if he’ll return before the season wraps up. This injury setback significantly dents his chances of making his Premier League debut, especially after Southampton’s recent relegation following their loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Having joined the club from Royal Antwerp during the winter transfer window, Udoh had impressed with the development squad, earning a call-up to train with the first team during the March international break. Notably, he scored twice on his home debut in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Sunderland in February.
While Udoh faces a period on the sidelines, another promising Nigerian talent, Southampton loanee Sam Edozie, is also under Eric Chelle’s watch as preparations for the Unity Cup continue.

In football, opportunity often comes wrapped in the unpredictability of timing and for Victor Udoh, that window may have cruelly slammed shut just when it was beginning to open. His injury, so close to the Unity Cup and on the back of an exciting run with Southampton’s development squad, is as frustrating for us as fans as it must be for him personally.
We’ve followed his progression with growing interest. From Royal Antwerp to St. Mary’s, Udoh had shown every indication of being a breakthrough candidate. That call-up to train with the first team wasn’t a gesture it was a nod to potential earned through hard work and talent. His brace against Sunderland, the energy he brought to the pitch these were signs of a player on the rise.
What now? This is where resilience takes centre stage. If Udoh’s journey is to be defined by anything, let it be his response to adversity. Injuries are brutal but temporary. With proper care and mental strength, this setback can be a pause not a stop in what we believe will be a long career.
As for the Unity Cup, it’s unfortunate not to see him wear the national colours just yet. But this opens the door for other emerging talents like Sam Edozie to step in and stake their claim. Nigeria’s depth is promising, and coach Chelle’s wide scouting net means no talent will go unnoticed for long.
We believe Udoh will return stronger. This may be a detour, but the destination remains the same: top-flight football, national team honours, and the fulfilment of immense promise.
