Fredrick Injury Hands Opportunity to Igoh Ogbu as Eagles Loss Key Defender

A knee injury has ruled Benjamin Fredrick out of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025), opening the door for Igoh Ogbu to stake a claim in the defensive line.

The 20 year old centre-back, on loan at Belgian side FC Dender, sustained the injury during training and will miss at least 12 weeks effectively ruling him out of the tournament.

Fredrick had become a regular under coach Eric Chelle, starting Nigeria’s last six matches and rapidly establishing himself as one of the country’s most promising defensive talents.

With Fredrick sidelined, the door has opened for Igoh Ogbu a defender who has recently returned to club action for Slavia Prague after a long lay-off.

For the Super Eagles, this reshuffle comes at a delicate moment. Losing a rising star ahead of a major tournament is a blow but if Ogbu can seize the chance, it may yet restore balance to a defence suddenly in flux.
