Aina Out for Rest of Year — Dyche Confirms No Return for Nottingham Forest Until 2026

Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche has confirmed that his Nigerian full-back Ola Aina will not play for the club again this calendar year.

Aina has been sidelined since September after suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with Super Eagles. Although he has begun light training, Dyche said the defender still needs more time to recover and is “not yet on grass with us.”

As a result of his prolonged absence and removal from Forest’s registered squads, Aina will remain unavailable until the club can formally reinstate him next season meaning a return won’t likely come until January 2026 at the earliest.

In football, impatience often masquerades as urgency  a rush to reclaim what’s lost, even at the cost of future stability. With Aina, Nottingham Forest have chosen patience. It might sting now. But in the long run, it may be their quiet act of prudence.

A hamstring injury, particularly one serious enough to surveil a spell away from the pitch, never heals neatly. The temptation is always to force a return to patch defensive frailties, to manage rotations, to chase short-term survival. But Dyche’s decision to wait signals something more considered: that the long-term integrity of body and squad takes precedence over immediate gains.

There is, in that restraint, a kind of respect for the player’s health, for the club’s structure, for the rhythm of recovery. Rushing Aina back could jeopardise his conditioning, risk re-injury, or worse, undermine his form at a time when the club and national team might rely on him again.

More broadly, this underscores a deeper truth about modern football: durability often matters as much as talent. A fully fit Aina in January could offer Forest a defensive anchor; a half-fit Aina in December would have risked destabilising everything. For now, the priority must be full restoration, not hasty returns.

When he does return, the hope will be for strength, not speed presence, not panic. That measured re-entry, more than any single match, may prove the more valuable contribution to his career — and to Forest.

  4. The absence of Aina also complicates the plans of Nigeria’s national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations  his fitness status remains uncertain, and his unavailability could force a rethink in defence.
  5. Dyche has described Aina’s recovery as “progressing well,” but reiterated that the defender still needs more time  emphasising that he is “not on the grass” with the full team yet.
