Former Super Eagles defender and captain Uche Okechukwu has been appointed as the new Sporting Director of Enyimba FC, Completesports.com reports. The 58 year old, affectionately called the “Gentle Giant”, takes over from Ifeanyi Ekwueme, who stepped down from the role last Sunday.
Before this appointment, Okechukwu served as Vice Chairman at Enyimba under club chairman and former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu. In an official statement, Enyimba praised Okechukwu as a club legend with extensive football experience and welcomed him to his new leadership position.
Kanu also expressed confidence in Okechukwu’s ability to use his experience, integrity and football knowledge to guide Enyimba back to success domestically and continentally. Okechukwu enjoyed an illustrious playing career in Europe, featuring for Brøndby IF in Denmark and Fenerbahçe SK in Turkey, where he was widely respected for his leadership and defensive prowess.
He also played for clubs in Nigeria including Enyimba FC, Flash Flamingoes FC and Iwuanyanwu National FC. Internationally, Okechukwu was a key member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and competed at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He also won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics as part of Nigeria’s famed Dream Team I.
