Okoye Suspended for Two Months After Illegal Betting Offence

Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month ban by the Italian Football Federation after it emerged he placed bets predicting he would receive a yellow card during Udinese’s 2–1 Serie A win over Lazio on 11 March 2024. The surge in suspicious betting activity reportedly generating over €120,000 at 8/1 odds—triggered an investigation by SNAI and subsequent disciplinary proceedings by FIGC and the Udine prosecutor’s office.

Initially feared to face up to four years ineligible for sporting fraud, Okoye was instead convicted of illegal betting, avoiding the more serious charge. His suspension commences with Udinese’s Coppa Italia opener versus Carrarese on 18 August and extends into the first five Serie A rounds, making him available again from 19 October.
