CAF Sanctions Algeria Over Misconduct After Super Eagles Quarter-Final Win

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a series of disciplinary sanctions on Algeria following misconduct by players, officials and supporters after their 2–0 quarter-final defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The disciplinary measures were confirmed by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and outlined in an official CAF Disciplinary Board statement.

Algeria’s goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches and defender Rafik Belghali banned for four matches — two of which are suspended to be served during AFCON 2027 qualifiers, with neither suspension affecting their eligibility for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In addition to the player sanctions, the FAF has been fined a total of USD 100,000 for several breaches of CAF’s disciplinary code related to conduct during and after the match. This includes fines for the team’s accumulation of yellow cards, inappropriate behaviour by players and officials, the use of smoke devices and the throwing of objects by supporters, failures in security compliance and offensive gestures directed at match officials.

FAF has stated that it intends to appeal the sanctions, contesting the extent of the penalties and seeking a reassessment of evidence surrounding some incidents in the aftermath of the match.
