NPFL Chairman Clubs Improved Because We Enforced Standards

NPFL chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye attributed the success of the 2023/24 season to the firm stance of the league organizers on maintaining high standards and enforcing rules. In a recent radio interview, Elegbeleye emphasized that their experience and strict approach were crucial in addressing the league’s issues.

We attacked the problems of the league, we’re not newcomers we’re experienced managers and we know that if we did well, history will be kind to us, Elegbeleye said. We don’t accept nonsense and so the clubs had to sit up. We had to do it right.

He highlighted the removal of 14 referees who were found inadequate and the deduction of points from clubs involved in crowd disturbances as key decisions. Additionally, the allowances for referees were significantly increased after previous organizers had failed to pay them for over three years.

Elegbeleye also mentioned that Enugu Rangers, the champions, received 150 million Naira as prize money, an improvement from the 100 million Naira awarded to Enyimba the previous season. Previously prize monies in the league were mere promises, he added.

The league was broadcast on television again and streamed to over 100 countries, enhancing its global reach.
