President Tinubu Flags Off Torch of Unity for 22nd National Sports Festival

President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the Torch of Unity for the 22nd National Sports Festival, reaffirming his government’s commitment to sports development across Nigeria.

At the event held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu described sports as a powerful tool for youth engagement, national unity, and economic growth. He called on both public and private sectors to collaborate in investing in sports infrastructure, talent discovery, mentorship, and sponsorship, all of which he said are key to boosting Nigeria’s international sporting presence.

The Torch of Unity, representing peace, strength, and solidarity, will tour all 36 states and the FCT ahead of the festival, which will take place in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30, 2025.

Tinubu paid tribute to Olympic medalist and national torchbearer Falilat Ogunkoya, praising her for her role in promoting sporting excellence in Africa. He also sent his best wishes to the Super Eagles as they prepared to face Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed readiness to host over 10,000 athletes in what he described as a record breaking event. He promised that the festival would feature world class facilities and participation from sports icons like Anthony Joshua and Tobi Amusan.

For the first time, all athletes will be housed in a purpose-built facility, setting new standards for comfort and camaraderie. National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko also announced the inclusion of the nation’s best junior athletes under the Invited Junior Athletes IJA category, fully sponsored by the NSC.

The ceremonial handover of the Torch of Unity was conducted by Delta State’s Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, and handed to Shehu Dikko before President Tinubu passed it on to the Main Organising Committee Chairman, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who finally entrusted it to Falilat Ogunkoya to begin its nationwide journey.
