Kwara United have secured their first-ever President Federation Cup after edging Abakaliki FC 4–3 on penalties following a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time at Lagos’s Mobolaji Johnson Arena. The ‘Harmony Boys’, representing Kwara State, held firm despite missing their first spot-kick and converted the next four to seal the shootout victory.
The final saw Abakaliki FC nicknamed the ‘giant killers’ after upsetting several top-flight teams match Kwara United toe to toe until the penalty drama. Their spirited run added extra intrigue to the match. In attendance were dignitaries including governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara State) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, Director-General Bukola Olapade, and former Nigerian internationals Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba.
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed pride, calling it the first major trophy for Kwara State since its creation in 1967. He congratulated the team, technical crew, management, supporters and Kwarans at home and abroad for a display of unity, discipline and resolve.
Victor Adeoye, named tournament MVP, said the success was driven by hard work and unwavering support from the state government, celebrating the milestone after 49 years. With the win, Kwara United will represent Nigeria in the 2025–26 CAF Confederation Cup.

We applaud Kwara United on breaking a nearly half-century trophy drought. Their journey to the 2025 President Federation Cup crown is more than a sporting triumph it is a testament to perseverance, belief and community cohesion. That their maiden title came via penalties adds to the drama but also underlines their composure under pressure.
We believe credit is due to both the squad and the support system around them. From the players’ calm in the shootout to Governor AbdulRazaq’s visible backing, this was a collective effort. The presence of national dignitaries and football icons like Kanu and Ikpeba highlighted how this victory transcends sport, lifting the spirits of Kwara citizens and Nigerians alike.
Abakaliki FC’s run to the final, knocking out established NPFL sides, demonstrated the unpredictable beauty of knockout football. Their grit deserves recognition, though it was ultimately Kwara United’s night to shine. Now, as Kwara United prepare for continental competition, it is vital they build on this momentum. The CAF Confederation Cup awaits, and fans will hope this win is the start of sustained success rather than an isolated moment.
We stand with Kwara United, believing they can carry this spirit into greater challenges. What began in Lagos’s penalty shootout can now echo across Africa if they stay focused, the story has only just begun.
