The Benin club says the referee should have stopped play under IFAB Law 1.10, while stressing it is challenging how the law was applied rather than accusing the officials of bias.

Bendel Insurance have formally petitioned the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over Enugu Rangers’ controversial 1-0 win in their rescheduled Matchday 9 fixture. The game was played at the Awka City Stadium on Wednesday, November 4, and the Flying Antelopes won through Chidozie Iwundu’s 47th-minute header.
In a club statement released on Thursday, November 5, Bendel said the goal frame shifted during Rangers’ attacking move and left the goal out of position. The Benin Arsenals insist the referee should have stopped play at once instead of letting the move continue.
The club’s protest centres on IFAB Law 1.10, which deals with displaced or broken goal frames. Under that law, play must be stopped until the frame is repaired or replaced, and the match restarts with a dropped ball if the repair is possible. If the frame cannot be fixed, the match must be abandoned.
Bendel also refer to IFAB Law 5.2, which makes a referee’s decisions on facts connected with play final. They argue that this law should not protect the decision, because the complaint is about whether a mandatory law was applied rather than about a judgment call.
The club has taken care to say that it is not accusing the match officials of deliberately favouring Rangers. It describes the protest as a question of fairness, player safety and the integrity of the league, and it points out that Iwundu’s goal was the only one in the match.

How The Goal Happened
The first half ended goalless, with both teams creating chances. Rangers came out stronger after the break, and Orya Joseph first saved an attempt from Emo, before Iwundu reacted fastest to the rebound and headed home from close range.
Iwundu nearly doubled the lead soon afterwards, but Orya produced another good save to keep the visitors in the game. Rangers then managed the contest and held on for all three points.
The win took Rangers to 21 points from 10 matches and opened a three-point gap over Bendel, who remain on 18. The fixture had originally been set for October 18 but was postponed so Rangers could concentrate on their CAF Champions League tie, and fans who like to forecast the table can try Super9ja’s title-race predictions.
History And What Happens Next
This is not the first controversy between the two clubs. In their Matchday 37 meeting last season, on May 10, Rangers beat Bendel 2-1. The NPFL later suspended referee Yakubu Adamu indefinitely, saying his decision to award a penalty in that game was not in line with the Laws of the Game.
The league will now have to look at the available evidence. A proper review would involve the match footage, the referee’s report, the condition and position of the goal frame, and the exact sequence leading to the goal.
It would also need to establish when the frame moved and whether the officials knew about it before the ball went in. No decision has been announced, so for now Rangers keep the three points.
The case could become an important test for the NPFL. Clubs will want to see consistent application of the rules, and readers who follow the table can look at the Bet9ja promotion for title-race followers as the story develops.
