Beyond Limits Football Academy forward Merveille Akinocho has signed a long term deal with La Liga side Villarreal. The academy announced the move on Tuesday, November 3, and it marks another big step for grassroots football in Nigeria.
Akinocho is 18 years old and was born in Benin Republic. He will begin his Spanish adventure with Villarreal’s Under-19 side, where he is expected to settle into European football. Neither club has revealed the length of the contract or the fee.
The timing is no accident. Reports say the move was delayed because of rules that limit international transfers of minors, so the club had to wait until he reached adulthood. Akinocho was born on June 29, 2008, and he celebrated his 18th birthday this summer.
From Benin To Ikenne
Akinocho grew up in Benin, then moved to Nigeria about two years ago to join Beyond Limits. The academy is based in Ikenne, Ogun State, and it has become a regular stop for scouts looking for young West African talent.
His time in Nigeria was a success. He played an important role as Beyond Limits won the TCC Championship, the TCC Cup and the TCC Super Cup, and the TCC is the Creative Championship, a competition that has become a shop window for young players.
Akinocho also has international experience. He played for Benin’s Under-17 side at the UFOA-B qualifying tournament in May 2024. Fans who like to follow young talent can look at the Bet9ja sign-up promotion while they follow the next generation.
Beyond Limits’ Production Line
Akinocho is not the first Beyond Limits player to catch European eyes. Onyebuchi Obasi left the academy for Norwegian club VÃ¥lerenga in February 2024, after winning the top-scorer award in the same Creative League.
Kparobo Arierhi is another example. The striker scored 22 goals in 15 matches for Beyond Limits, finishing as top scorer and most valuable player, before joining Lillestrøm. That pipeline gives Akinocho a clear route to follow.

What Next For Akinocho
Villarreal’s approach to young forwards is patient. The club tends to bring them in early and develop them in the academy system before deciding on a path to the first team, so Akinocho should not expect a quick promotion.
The first team is now coached by Iñigo Pérez, who arrived from Rayo Vallecano after leading them to the Conference League final. A young striker who impresses at Under 19 level will have plenty to aim for.
Nigerian grassroots football deserves credit too. A player from the Creative Championship has now reached a La Liga club, and that should encourage other academies to compete. New Bet9ja users can look at the YOHAIG Bet9ja sign-up code as they keep up with the latest transfer news.
