Niger Tornadoes coach Umar Tyabo Abdullahi has described the 2-1 win over Ikorodu City as one of the club’s most crucial results this season. He said it was vital for their ambition of climbing the NPFL table.
The Ikon Allah Boys won the Matchday 9 game at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, extending their unbeaten run to three matches. The win lifts them to 11th on 12 points from nine games. New Bet9ja users can look at Bet9ja promotion code fundamentals.
Nafiu Obalowu opened the scoring in the 27th minute, three minutes before the half-hour mark. Bashir Musa then doubled the lead eight minutes from the end of regulation time.
Substitute Basit Ayinde pulled one back for Ikorodu City deep in stoppage time after a goalkeeping error, but the Tornadoes held on to take all three points.
Tyabo said his team prepared for the game “like a cup final” because they understood the importance of winning at home. He said that two wins and two draws in their earlier home games was not good enough for their ambitions.
He also addressed the goalkeeping error behind Ikorodu’s goal. Mistakes are part of football, he said, and he called it a learning opportunity for the goalkeeper and the whole team. He added that it could have been a different game if it had happened earlier, perhaps with nine minutes left.
Tyabo praised Ikorodu City, a side that challenged for a top-three finish last season and has been together for a long time. By contrast, his team is still building, having been assembled barely two months before the season began with several new players. New Bet9ja users can claim the YOHAIG Bet9ja launch bonus.
That context matters. Niger Tornadoes have three wins, three draws and three defeats, and a three-game unbeaten run suggests the new group is gelling.
Next up is a trip to Abia Warriors on Sunday, October 25, with kickoff at 4pm. Ikorodu City host Shooting Stars on the same day.
