Nigeria’s Falconets will take on Colombia in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, after Colombia edged out tournament hosts Poland 1-0 in Thursday’s Round of 16 clash.
A Late Own Goal Sends Colombia Through
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute, when a shot from Colombia’s Mariana Silva deflected off Poland defender Martyna Bartczak and into her own net. The match had been tightly contested with few clear chances beforehand, and Poland pushed for a late equaliser that Colombia’s defence and goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo managed to keep out.
Colombia advanced from Group E as one of the best third placed teams, having beaten Costa Rica, drawn with Portugal and lost to North Korea. It marks back to back quarterfinal appearances for the South Americans at this level.
A Rematch 16 Years In The Making
This will be the second meeting between the Falconets and Colombia at the World Cup, following their clash in the semi final of the 2010 edition. Nigeria won that encounter 1-0 thanks to a second minute strike from Ebere Orii, though they went on to lose 2-0 to Germany in the final.
An Emphatic Route To The Last Eight
The Falconets themselves reached the quarterfinal in style earlier on Thursday, thrashing England 3-0 with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and substitute Mary Mamudu.
