Edo Queens have been rewarded with a N50 million cash prize for winning the 2026 WAFU B Women’s Champions League. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday at a reception held in the team’s honour in Benin City.

A Hero’s Welcome

The players and their officials returned home to a rousing reception following their successful campaign in Burkina Faso. On arrival at the airport, the squad paraded through Airport Road to Osadebe Avenue, where cheering supporters and Governor Okpebholo were waiting to receive them.

Okpebholo Praises The Champions

Addressing the players, Okpebholo praised their resilience and fighting spirit, and recalled how confident he had felt about their chances heading into the final against Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies. He also singled out the goalkeeper’s composure during the decisive penalty shootout, saying, “That brilliant save gave us the energy and confidence we needed,” and that he sensed the tide had turned in Nigeria’s favour at that moment.

The governor pledged continued government backing for the team, promising more opportunities to help the players develop further.

A Dramatic Final

Edo Queens beat Ampem Darkoa Ladies 4-1 on penalties in Ouagadougou on Sunday night after a 2-2 draw in normal time. The win secures Edo Queens a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League as WAFU B’s representative.
