Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has said his main priority is helping South African club Chippa United enjoy a successful season, rather than fighting to reclaim Nigeria’s number one goalkeeping spot.
Nwabali rejoined Chippa United last month, having previously left the club in February. During his time away from the national team, Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo have both featured in goal for the Super Eagles.
“I’m Only Focused On My Club Right Now”
Speaking to SABC Sport, Nwabali said he felt positive about returning to Chippa United, both personally and for the good of the team, and that the arrangement with the club had worked out well for both parties. He said his focus for now was simply on helping the team pick up as many points as possible, adding that he was not currently worried about a Super Eagles return and that all his attention was on his club form.
A Crowded Goalkeeping Picture
Nigeria’s goalkeeping department has become increasingly competitive, with Okoye recently earning praise from his Udinese coach after a strong Coppa Italia return from injury, while Okonkwo has also continued to feature for the national team. The Super Eagles are next in action in September, when they face Madagascar in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, a fixture that could offer an early signal of where head coach Eric Chelle’s goalkeeping preferences currently sit.
