NPFL chief operating officer Davidson Owumi has warned participating clubs they must build and maintain functional websites or risk losing their club licences.

Owumi issued the warning in Enugu during a seminar for club media officers, media directors, and marketing officers, organised by the league in partnership with Afrinvest under the title “NPFL/Afrinvest Marketing Investments, Brand Merchandising and Media.”

Sponsorship Revenue at Stake

He said poor access to credible, verifiable information from all 20 NPFL clubs remains one of the biggest obstacles to attracting sponsors, arguing that both the league and its clubs are losing millions of naira in potential sponsorship revenue as a result. He described the current state of club data as inconsistent and, in some cases, entirely absent due to the lack of functional websites and adequate social media presence.

Licensing Sanctions Coming

Owumi confirmed the league will introduce enforceable measures to ensure compliance, warning that any club, whether newly promoted or already in the top flight, that fails to create and maintain a functional website will not be granted a licence, and existing licences could eventually be withdrawn from clubs that fall short.

Media Departments Need Investment

He also urged club administrators to properly fund their media departments, warning that without adequate funding and consistent staff training, those departments would only perform below average. Owumi described a well run media department as the public face of a club, and outlined what he considers the ideal team a director of media, still photographer, graphic designer, news editor, social media manager, content creator, and videographer.

He lamented that most NPFL clubs currently operate well below that standard, often relying on a single person to handle photography, interviews, reports, social media, video, and graphics all at once, calling the approach unprofessional and counter-effective.
