Emmanuel Ekong’s proposed move to Croatian giants Hajduk Split has collapsed after the Nigerian-born forward failed his medical examination.
According to Croatian outlet 24sata, Hajduk decided to pull out of the deal after the 23 year old did not pass a routine medical assessment. Ekong had been expected to join the club from Swedish champions Malmo FF on an initial season long loan, with Hajduk holding an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
The transfer had appeared to be in its final stages, with both clubs working through the paperwork before the medical setback brought negotiations to an abrupt end. Ekong was notably left out of Malmo’s matchday squad for their Allsvenskan clash against Kalmar, with club officials indicating beforehand that he was close to completing a move elsewhere.
With the transfer now off, Ekong is expected to return to Malmo, though his immediate future remains uncertain, with the Swedish club potentially exploring alternative options before the window closes.
Ekong joined Malmo from Italian Serie A side Empoli and has represented Sweden at various youth levels, despite being eligible to play for Nigeria through his family heritage.
