Samuel Chukwueze is being tried out in an unfamiliar role under new AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim, after being deployed as a right sided wing back during the club’s first pre-season training session at Milanello on Monday.
The session, open to supporters, gave fans their first look at how Amorim intends to set his team up this season. As widely expected, the Portuguese coach appeared to be working from his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, but the biggest talking point was where Chukwueze fit into it.
Rather than featuring as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the striker, Chukwueze was positioned on the right side of a four man midfield line in a wing back role, a switch that echoes how Amorim used Amad Diallo in a similar position during his time at Manchester United.
Traditionally an attacking right winger, Chukwueze is now being tested in a role that demands considerably more defensive discipline alongside his attacking instincts down the flank. The experiment comes shortly after Amorim ruled out a summer exit for the Nigerian, ending speculation that had linked him with a move away from San Siro.
Chukwueze spent last season on loan at Premier League club Fulham, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances.
