Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche looks set for a fresh start away from the Premier League after a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace, with Real Sociedad emerging as one of several clubs chasing his signature, according to a report from Soccernet.ng.
Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that the Basque club have made enquiries about the 23 year old and are considering a loan move with an option to make it permanent at season’s end. Getafe president Angel Torres has already confirmed the club would sell if the right offer arrives, with player sales an important tool for meeting La Liga’s financial regulations.
Release Clause A Sticking Point
Uche’s contract carries a €25 million release clause, but Real Sociedad reportedly view that figure as too high and are hoping Getafe’s financial pressures will help both clubs settle on a lower fee. His current market value is estimated at between €12 million and €15 million.
Real Sociedad are far from alone in the chase. Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and AC Milan have all been credited with interest, while Premier League clubs Wolves and Brentford are also said to be monitoring his situation.
A Loan That Never Got Going
Uche arrived at Crystal Palace in September 2025 with high hopes, but the move never worked out on the pitch. His loan deal included an obligation-to-buy clause worth between €18 million and €20 million, triggered only if he started at least 10 Premier League matches, a target he never came close to reaching.
He made 14 Premier League appearances in total, every one of them from the bench, totalling just 169 minutes across the season and finishing without a league goal or assist. His best moments came in the UEFA Europa Conference League, where he scored twice, though manager Oliver Glasner later left him out of the squad entirely for the knockout rounds.
A Strained Relationship With Glasner
Several factors were said to be behind Uche’s struggles, including Glasner’s preferred 3-4-3 system not suiting his more flexible style, and a settled Palace attacking line leaving little room for him to break in. By contrast, Uche has thrived at Getafe playing across several attacking positions under José Bordalás.
The relationship between player and manager grew visibly strained in May, when Uche gave an emotional interview reflecting on his lack of playing time, expressing hope of proving himself if given the chance but doubting he would get another opportunity, saying he felt his manager did not rate him. Glasner responded publicly soon after, acknowledging that Uche felt he lacked the manager’s trust, while insisting that places in the team had to be earned through performance and discipline.
By the time his loan ended, Uche had gone almost two months without featuring competitively for Palace. With the obligation to buy clause impossible to reach, the Premier League club opted against a permanent deal and sent him back to Getafe, setting up the current chase for his signature this summer.
