Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has explained why veteran forward Asisat Oshoala was omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming double-header friendlies against Cameroon, stressing that it was a tactical decision to assess other players ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco next month.
Oshoala, 31, who has been in strong form for Al-Hilal Women in Saudi Arabia, was a surprise exclusion from the 25-player roster named for fixtures in Yaoundé on 28 February and 3 March. Madugu made clear that the friendlies are being used as opportunities to give chances to other squad members and to see “new things” from fringe players and emerging talents. He reiterated that Oshoala remains part of his plans for the WAFCON proper and that there should be no major concerns about her absence for these specific games.
On WAFCON and Nigeria’s Ambitions
Madugu also outlined his broader goals for the 2026 WAFCON, where Nigeria will defend their title and aim to extend their record with an 11th continental crown. The Super Falcons are drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt, and Madugu acknowledged that the expanded 16-team format up from 12 means the competition will be tougher with no team to be underrated. He emphasised the importance of preparation, tactical cohesion and competitive readiness to meet the challenges ahead.
Beyond the title defence, Madugu said another key objective will be to secure a top-four finish at WAFCON, which would earn Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil by reaching the semi-finals. That dual focus continental success and World Cup qualification—has shaped his planning and squad selection, including the decision to rotate personnel during the friendlies.
