Enugu Rangers Maintain Lead in NPFL with Enyimba Close Behind

Enugu Rangers have strengthened their position at the top of the NPFL standings by securing a 2-0 victory against Plateau United at home. Close on their heels, Enyimba remains in contention, just two points adrift, following their own 2-0 triumph over Katsina United in Aba.

Rangers have accumulated 57 points from 32 games, whereas Enyimba’s latest win brings them to 55 points. Enyimba’s Chijioke Mbaoma was pivotal in their match, scoring a penalty at the 61-minute mark, which ties him as the joint-top scorer alongside Sikiru Alimi of Remo Stars, each with 14 goals. For Rangers, Chiedozie Okorie initiated the scoring after 25 minutes, and Godwin Obaje later sealed the win with a stoppage time penalty.

In other league action, Remo Stars secured a 3-0 win against Niger Tornadoes, keeping them third in the standings with 53 points, thanks to Alimi’s impressive double. Meanwhile, Shooting Stars ascended to fourth after defeating Sunshine Stars 2-0 in a Southwest Derby, courtesy of second half goals from Taofeek Malomo and Christian Pyagbara.

Conversely, Lobi Stars faced a setback, losing 3-2 to bottom placed Gombe United, which saw them drop to fifth with 52 points. On a positive note, Akwa United moved clear of the relegation zone by overcoming Kano Pillars, highlighted by Friday Ubong’s dual goals, increasing his season tally to eight.

The league will pause briefly to accommodate Rivers United’s outstanding matches, which have been delayed due to their commitments in the CAF Confederation Cup.
