Top-Quality Pitches Key to Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Bid

Nigeria’s Super Eagles risk budding elite talent if the Nigeria Football Federation fails to upgrade its home pitches, warns Monimichelle CEO Ebi Egbe. With home qualifiers against Rwanda in September and Benin in October fast approaching, Egbe stressed that the playing surface is as essential as stadium size.

Fans have voiced concerns over the lacklustre atmosphere at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium, and with Abuja’s Moshood Abiola Stadium undergoing renovation, options remain limited. Egbe, a global expert in turf installations, emphasised that world-class pitches are crucial for elite players accustomed to hybrid turf in Europe pitches he credits with successes like Nigeria’s Unity Cup triumph and draw in Moscow.

He drew parallels with Senegal, attributing their success including an away win in England to consistent investment in pitch infrastructure. “Nigeria has more raw talent than Senegal, but we don’t have pitches to support these raw talents,” Egbe stated. He applauded President Tinubu’s sports agenda but warned that without pitch upgrades, Nigeria’s World Cup hopes would suffer.

Egbe also criticised the poor maintenance culture and political interference delaying stadium upgrades, citing a stalled project in Benue State. He offered to remedy major venues like Abuja and Lagos within two months, noting Monimichelle’s track record having installed hybrid pitches at Enyimba and Remo Stars stadiums.
