The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a firm directive to all first tier clubs stadiums must be fitted with functional LED floodlights and reliable backup generators to host home matches in the 2025/26 season.
In a memo signed by Chief Operating Officer DavidsonโฏOwumi, clubs were warned that venues lacking these essential facilities will be disqualified from hosting fixtures and may be forced to relocate matches to alternative grounds.
This move forms part of the NPFLโs alignment with the European season calendar starting 22 Augustโฏ2025 with the last matchday on 24 Mayโฏ2026 and aims to increase floodlit evening fixtures to boost fan attendance and enhance broadcast quality.
Owumi stressed that this requirement is nonโnegotiable venues must meet GradeโฏA infrastructure standards before routine inspections, with no exceptions granted once the season begins.

We recognise this mandate as a defining step towards raising the NPFLโs professionalism. Installing LED floodlights and standby power isnโt just about lighting itโs about laying the groundwork for a modern sporting spectacle.
We understand the dual purpose served here enhancing the matchโday atmosphere and reassuring broadcasters and supporters that fixtures will run without interruption. Night games bring energy, and with proper illumination, clubs can generate revenue and show reliability.
Yet, the risk of disallowing home venues demands attention. Clubs with tight budgets may struggle to meet these infrastructure upgrades alone. The NPFL should consider collaborating with local governments or private partners to provide grants or phased funding support that would prevent smaller clubs from losing their home advantage.
We feel that improved oversight is vital too. Regular inspections and transparent standards ensure consistency across the board. And once clubs see the benefits higher attendance, better media coverage theyโll likely invest further in facilities beyond lighting.
We believe this directive is not just timely itโs essential. With clear vision, strategic support, and firm enforcement, the NPFL can transform matchโday experiences. Infrastructure sets the stage, and Nigeriaโs top league should now step into the spotlight.
